Kleio: Muse of History, 2023
Located in the Historic Chase Bank turned abandoned retail store, Muses was a three-day Miami Art Week exhibition featuring myself and eleven other artists. We were each tasked to create a contemporary muse and I decided to create a visual novel to explore my muse as a reimagined Black female figure. My muse — Clio: Muse of History — changed to Kleio, not only as a result of her name being closer to the original Greek spelling but also as a nod to how letters can become racialized on Black figures/characters/people. This name change was a big part of her reimaging as it gives credit to origin and originality. Given my placement in the show—a former dressing room—I selected fashion as Kleio’s historical topic. Using Tyranobuilder and Illustrator, my reimagined Kleio character guides interactors through a visual lesson on Black pioneers in fashion.
